Investigation of Heat Transfer from Polymer Particles in Gas Phase Polymerization Reactors with CFD Analysis

Abstract

In this paper, heat transfer from polymer particles under different conditions of gas phase polymerization reactor has been investigated applying computational fluid dynamic (CFD) technique. In this study, it has been shown that classic correlations such as Ranz-Marshall are sufficiently adequate when polymer particles with no interaction are to be modeled. However, when polymer particles have interactions these correlations are not satisfactory. The influence of particles diameter, gas flow rate and polymer particle shape on heat transfer coefficient are investigated. The effects of particles configurations and their distance from each other on the value of Nusslet number at polymer particles surface were also investigated. CFD simulation results showed for heat transfer on small polymer particles with high activity both convective and conductive heat transfer mechanisms are effective and important
