[English]

Wax deposition is one of the most severe operational drawbacks for flow assurance of crude oil pipelines. It it one of the main challenges in exploitation of offshore oil and gas resources and in cold environmental conditions. The properties of the inner surface of the pipes have a significant effect on wax deposition, which can be prevented by changing the properties of the inner surface by coatings. This study introduces this phenomenon and challenge of wax deposition in the oil industry and its extent and problems. It also presents ways to prevent and reduce wax deposition in oil and gas transmission pipelines. In this study, a surface modification solution has been presented using low surface energy coatings inside the pipes to reduce adhesion and deposition of paraffin wax. The XDLVO theory was used to analyze intermolecular interactions and also to predict the adhesion tendency between wax particles and the inner wall of the pipe in an organic medium. First, by measuring the contact angles of various probe liquids on the wax layer, the wax was characterized based on surface energy, and then its interaction energies were calculated. Among different interaction energies, the Lifshitz-van der Waals surface energy of the inner wall of the pipe is the dominant component in the surface›s tendency to form wax deposits. By changing the surface from metallic to non-metallic, this component acquires a positive value, which will be useful for reducing the surface›s tendency to form wax deposit.
