[English]

Mechanical Specific Energy (MSE) has been widely adopted in the drilling industry as a key performance indicator for evaluating drilling efficiency. However, the classical interpretation of MSE often suffers from oversimplification, failing to account for complex rock-bit interactions and downhole environmental factors. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the evolution of MSE, from its empirical foundations to contemporary integrated hydro-mechanical models. By critically evaluating recent literature and comparing various experimental and field-based methodologies, this paper identifies significant bottlenecks in the current implementation of MSE, including the inaccurate reliance on Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) and the neglect of hydraulic energy components. Furthermore, this study highlights the growing trend toward data-driven diagnostic frameworks and emphasizes the critical need for standardized laboratory validations to bridge the gap between theoretical modeling and operational reality. A roadmap is proposed to transition MSE from a descriptive monitoring metric into a predictive, closed-loop framework essential for the next generation of automated drilling systems.
